Making Custom Pipes From Your Stock Pipes

Take the pipes off and take them to a machine shop or cut them off yourself

I decided to take my pipes to a machine shop where they cut off the taper ends of the stock pipes. We tried (well, I watched and supervised) cutting about 4" off first but found that was not enough. You need to cut enough off to be beyond the little welds that hold the baffles in the pipes. This picture shows the second part we cut off and a reference as to the length the pipes will end up being.

This picture shows the first part (far right) and then the second part we cut off (center). On the left is the second piece we cut off after figuring how much we needed to cut off. I put a ruler there so you could see it was about 7" we ended up lopping off the ends in order to clear the riveted/welded stock baffle plates.

Here is a closeup shot of the rivets that you need to cut behind in order to clear the stock baffles. You need to cut about 3/4" back from the center of the rivet/weld mark to clear the internal plate. The holder plate is 1/2" deep and the rivet is centered in the lip of the holder plate.

On to the next step.
