H3 LED lamps for spotlamps.
      #503083 - 04/04/11 12:00 PM

Thought I would try out these in my spotlamps.
H3 fitting LED x 26 3w replacements.

The idea was to lower the electrical load on the bike.
I do not have a Triumph light bar and lamps, but I know a man who does, so I will cover that later. I have a homebrew light bar with Wipac lamps.

The LEDs arrived and I was not sure they would fit but for £5 took a chance.

The length of the LED lamps from the H3 mounting plate is 35mm, a standard H3 was 30mm, but they did fit in my Wipac lamps. Temporary hook up.

Before removing the Standard H3 lamps I measured the current they take, engine is off.

8.57 Amps, quite a load.
Fitting was straight forward and on turn on the current was down to this.

0.16 A thats quite a drop
But are the any good? well its hard to take pictures of lamps, well for me anyway, but here they are.

A bit further away.

And further again.

They dont seem to put out as much light when shined against the garage door, but looking at them they are quite bright, brighter than I thought they would be anyway. I have the spot lamps on the bike to be seen by others, not for me to see with. "Gentlemen dont go driving in the dark" was that Joseph Lucas?

Back to my friend with the offical Triumph lightbar.
Triumph lamp with LED lamp.

And finaly we have for comparison, LHS as you look at it is LED, RHS is standard.

Thanks Harry.

I think its a good saving on electrical load on the bikes battery and charging system.

VERY interesting report. Thanks for that. How are they to 'drive with' at night? Are they somewhat usable for night riding? Do you have any specs on the light output of these LEDs? This would really work for me to lower power consumption with heated gear.

Thx,
H.

Thank you for posting this... I've been wondering about this subject myself.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on night driving with the LEDs.

Great report! Well done.
I also don't ride at night, but run 55w spots, and high beam
in daylight to be seen. Wonder where we can source them US?
Thanks for your efforts,
Uncle Charlie

Way to go, Stephen. I guess the real test will be a ride at night.

(I'm starting to imagine how many more lights I'll be able to add with such little draw on the charging system! )

Good one Keith, I make it you could fit an additional 54 SETs of lamps for the same load, you may however need to upgrade your front springs and rejet for that.

I don't recon these will give out as much light in a night time situation as the 55w H3, they are rated at 3W, this is just based on how they appeared on the garage door. I will bring the bike out next chance I get in the dark and keep you posted.

These appear to be the same item avalible WW. but im sure there is a US supplier out there.

Stephen, did you get a chance to test these in night time riding conditions?

There is some light hitting the road at night, not much though. I dont go out in the dark. They make good daytime driving lights to get you noticed.
