I want to somehow hook up a garage door opener on the bike, looking for ideas. I would like to rig up a switch in the "dashboard", but what do I wire the switch to?

I did a bit of 'po boy engineering' I wire tied one to the engine mount under the rear of the tank. Works like a charm. Took all of five mins. When I hit the drive way I just reach under and press the button.

That's exactly what I was looking for! Now I have to find one of those tiny remotes so it will fit under the console.

I pull up to the garage, honk my horn twice and my kid comes out and opens the door for me. Works fine for me.

There was a video I saw a while back that the guy's wife came out and opened the door. I'm not that lucky and my kids aren't old enough!

My garage door opener is temperamental. Sometimes it works...however, our dog can tell the difference between any of my rides and other motorsickles rolling through the hood.
Generally I like to leave the bike outside for a while so it can cool down with a breeze. Rolling into the garage straight away makes for a long cool down and a hotter garage. So having a remote on my ride would not afford convenience in a meaningful way. Then again, I'd have to have one for each bike too.

I used industrial strength Velcro(get it at walmart) and placed my regular door opener under the right side of the tank. you can barely see it and it can be removed for washing the bike or if it rains.

Just picked up one of these on ebay. Hopefully it'll work with my garage door opener, then I'll tear it apart and try to attach a separate button.

Just finished wiring one up on the week end. I used the translated link above as a guide to solder wires onto the circuit board of my remote. I then put the remote under the seat and ran the wires to a button just under the ignition, similar to pharmboy327. Took less than an hour.

I found a possible switch. It seems a little large-ish, but it's a textured black and isn't too obtrusive. It's at least worth a look for the price.

The black switch is a very high quality switch. It isn't real small but the quality of the internal parts far surpasses what you would find at Radio shack. We use both red and black here on some of the actor controlled products we manufacture.

Not that I know of. If/when I ever get things put together, my plan would be to put it on the key switch cover where's it's a little bit out of the way.
To be honest, this is a long-term project. I have a piece of crap garage door without an opener right now. I need a new door and an opener. Heck the garage itself is a project - I just installed new windows and some shelving. One step at a time, eh?

I just got the Flash2Pass transmitter/receiver, and it works great. Had to add the power supply because of my model opener, but I just used a radio shack multi-voltage power supply and it worked fine. To install the transmitter in the headlight, I used my multimeter to find which wires got voltage when flashing the brights. Solderless wire taps provided, make it easy. So to open the garage door, I just flash my brights twice. Works fine. Only complaint might be that I would prefer a little more range, but it's the same range as my regular Garage Door Opener remotes. With this approach there's nothing to waterproof. Nothing external, exposed to weather, gets modified. Works well, easy install.

Welcome to the madness Mike! And thanks for the results of your flashtopass setup. Living in the South, well heck, where I in the North, I would want not only a way to open the garage door without dismounting, but a way to turn the heat on in the garage while I was 5 miles out!

FYI you can buy a generic Genie keychain remote on eBay for cheap. It's green with a yellow button and tucks into the IP cover nicely.
I had a hell of a time finding a temporary button that fit the 8mm opening in the IP.

MIA lately but thanks for the props. Mine was pretty simple. Push button switch from RadioShack and then wired to the garage door remote. I had an extra remote that I removed from the plastic case (to reduce size under the seat. I soldered the wires from the push button switch to the contact points on the circuit board of the remote. Packaged the remote up in a ziplock to reduce the chance of moisture exposure. The remote sits under the seat and back by the fender. The range seems limited by being under the seat but works from at least 25 feet away.
