Ive only a moment to write this so forgive any typos, etc.

My Dad, "LarryShep" was involved in a horrible accident this afternoon on hwy 9 at Ben Higgins Rd. A car was coming off BH, turning south onto 9 and struck my Dad as we were making my way back to Dawsonville. He's in awful shape. He's been transporterd to North Fulton Medical ER for evaluations, etc. PLEASE PLEASE Pray for him. Many of you know what a tough old bird he is. I've never seen an accident like this. He's in such horrible pain. More to folllow as I can get updates, etc. out.

Jim Sheppard

He was on his bike, he and Jimmy were out riding together...

Nothing new..Gordon is on the trail trying to track him down, last news was he was being flown to Atlanta Medical Center.

On a strange note, I was heading out riding and live about 5 miles from the accident, infact, a phone call from Nemo made me choose to take an alternate route or I would have come upon it, instead I emerged on 9 just in time to meet the ambulance headed south.

Hang in there buddy...

Ok, Gordon and his wife are with us. My Dad was transported via Life Flight from North Fulton to Atlanta Medical Center. He is in very very bad shape. The list of injuries is incredible. The most severe is he has a torn Aorta. He did go into Cardiac Arrest and was revived with CPR.

Right now, my Mom, wife and Gordon and his wife are holding down the fort here in the ICU waiting room. Will post more as it comes in. Please pass the word and keep up the prayers!! Oh, someone asked; yea he was on his bike. We were just wrapping up our ride today and on the way home.

On a side note as I sit here.. The medics on scene were asking him questions like "what day is it", etc..etc... I knew my Dads mind was razor sharp when they asked him "Who is the President?" and ohhhh man, it was a classic LarryShep rant! Hahaa!

I definetly am calling his name out to The Most High. May God bless and keep him and insure that he gets the best treatment and care possible. Also I ask for strength and courage for his family as they rally around him and each other through this crisis. In J.C. I pray.

I will continue to lift Larry Shep up through this time. Will be watching the board for updates.

Man! Torn aorta is a bad one, amazing he is still hanging in there! On the bright side if they already fixed that it should heal fine. Good to hear he was alert and thinking straight too!

Ellen and I left the family to see Larry in ICU. The list of injuries is vast. The doctors opened him up to check the heart. From what I can understand, the did not find a tear but a rather large hematoma. The heart kept right on beating through the surgery. We finally got to speak to a doctor. The next twelve to twenty-four hours are critical... they are doing all they can and anyone that knows Larry knows he is a fighter... so lets keep up those prayers and positive thoughts, brothers and sisters..... Larry and the family need all the love they can get.... Jim, please call me with any news ... you have my number but I did not get yours.... Gordon

He's made it thru the night! I didn't expect that based on what the Doctors told us. His condition hasn't really changes other than his blood pressure is now dropping to near normal levels. Keep the prayers coming!

Many Many thanks to you all!

Another sidenote: Rhonda and I will be heading down to the ICU for our visit with my Dad for the 230p-245p time.

A couple of quotes from Jim on Facebook

We just got the official word on my dad; they now consider him as "Stable"!!!! This is HUGE news in the recovery process as they have been extremely reluctant to say it before!! Keep those prayers going!!

Surgery still on for the morning though, much better for it to be successful!!

Let's keep showing support for one of our own people!!!!!

YES!! Still sending positive thoughts and checking this thread often.

Rhonda and I went to the accident scene to try and find his car keys. We didn't find them, but believe it or not, Rhonda FOUND his Gremlin Bell !!

I don't know who gave it to my Dad, but we wanted to make sure you knew that we had it - intact! The bell has the Canadian Maple leaf on it so thank you Canada friends!!

We're here in ICU right now. His aorta/stint surgery has been delayed and we assume it's due to other emergencies. So far, the word of the day is Stable which is a lot better than "he won't make it thru the night". We're so blessed with the outpouring of Love and support from the Motorcycling Community! You guys ROCK!!

It's a fact Jim,

When I was on "sabbatical" a few years ago, the support via all my friends on ba.com meant a lot. Say Hi to Larry for all of us

Jim,

Lynn and I are praying for your Dad's recovery. We just got the news from a message Gordan left me Saturday. I cannot begin to say how much we love your old man. Larry is a stalwart in my book: A man of true grit. Thank God he has pulled through to this point and continues to be graded as Stable! I sure do hope that Cathy is okay too. Such an angel.

Prayers, hugs and kisses being sent y'alls way. Get well soon Larry!!!!

Jim & Lynn

Any word on the surgery this morning or if it happened?

I second what Mike said, Jim. If there is anything his brothers and sisters can do here, let us know. I've spent time with Larry at 3 different GA. Rallies and he and Mrs. Sheppard are two of the nicest people I have ever met. Of course on the rides I never see Larry until we take a break or have a meal, because he is always at the front of the pack. I will continue to pray that he will be whole again!

Jim -

One of my riding and life role models. I am sorry that I am so late to post having just read the news. I have a voice mail from my very good friend down in Merritt Beach that I know now is not concerning a happier topic. Rest assured that I am praying my a$$ off for Larry.

And thanks to Gordon for passing on the news, as hard as it was for him to convey it.

Surgery was postponed this morning due to his heart acting up. He's on deck to go in the morning for the aorta/stint surgery. He's got a multitude of injuries, but this is the most important. Final visitation for the night is at 830pm EST so I'll pass on the prayers to him!

From Larry's Daughter-In-law, Rhonda:

"Miracle report....dr m has just reported to us he is thru surgery and he did GREAT!!!!!!!! She didn't have to block his vein to the arm, the blood was all contained. She said it was easy repair. Noe, he's not out of the woods but as dr m said this was the one thing tag would have stopped it all. We are our way to recovery people. GO GOD!"

From Rhonda, just now:

Miracle report part 3.....the nurse told us he has been taken off the heart medication and is functioning on his own (still on vent) but the heart is working again. And he is having good kidney functions which was a big concern because of the contrast ct scan. And the nurse in her opinion says if he continues to improve like this, he could be out of icu and in a room within a week. Praise the LOrd. Christ had to go to the grave so we could experience the ressurection. It's Easter people! Thank you all so much. Please don't stop praying. He's got lots of healing but at least he's not in a pinebox.

So whatever you are doing my BA brothers and sisters, keep it up!! Whether it is prayers, positive thoughts or whatever.... Send Larry and his family your love... G

Status update on my Dad.....my wife and mom went for a visit this morning. His color looked better, he opened his eyes for my wife, wrinkled his forehead and tried to move his lips....I later went to the hospital and his color looked good. I began asking him questions and have him respond by squeezing my hand. He squeezed my hand when I asked him if he knew who I was. Visitation is limited to immediate family.....his situation his day by day....we will post more info as we receive....keep the prayers, positive energy going to Dad.....we feel that he is responding......he is fighting with all he's got. By watching him ride, you know he does everything with excellence and this is no different....we greatly appreciate all the love, support and prayers. Looking forward to the Larry Sheppard BBQ when he personally thanks everyone for the support!

I'm absolutely stoked on the latest good news! I think I speak for all of us when I say, we shall not rest until Larry is completely 'out of the woods.' Positive thoughts continue, I assure you.

Well said!

WOW!!! I just saw this today. I’ll be addin to the pile of Prayers going skyward.
I’ve respected and wanted to ride with Larry for many years now but something would always get in the way, usually an igniter, so I pray he makes a full recovery so some day I’ll get to meet this fine man. Hang in there Bro. Things are looking better.

FYI... Per Rhonda this evening, there is no change. Sometimes, I think, no change is as good as anything else given all that could go the other way.

Quick update: He had surgery late this afternoon on his neck and the surgeon was happy with how it turned out. The next step is the Theocratic portion that's damaged. That surgery will be a little more tricky. Don't know when it'll happen yet. On a positive note, the spinal cord appears to be intact so paralysis shouldn't be an issue thus far. The Post Surgical CT Scan of the heart showed to be normal. The Doc's are very happy so far with what he's been through.

Keep the prayers rolling in!

Theocratic damage? Surgery to repair this? Sorry, I'm a bit confused by this one. Still, a great report overall...so glad to hear all our prayers are working!!! Thanks for the update. Will be keeping all of you, and especially Larry, in our thoughts and prayers.

i will just repeat what two wheelin said about knowing you have a lot on your plate right now and that we all cannot thank you enough for taking the time to keep us updated. those of us that know your dad, have ridden with him, or have just shared a meal with him, know first hand what kind of man larry is and are concerned. although we cannot be with you in the flesh, please know that we are there in our hearts and that your updates are very important to us. times when i dont have time to sit here and check everything that i usually check , i will just check to see if there is an update on Larry. i cant imagine comming to Ga. and not having your dad touch my shirt pocket to see if i have a pack and then with that shiteatin grin ask if i can spare a smoke. Please tell him we all expect to see him in May and PLEASE dont you stop updateing, it is muchoimportantae to us as is he!!!! ALSO, please give your Mom and extra big hug from all of us and let her know that we are also praying for her and thinking about how she is doing!!!!

Thanks Two Wheel n! I kept trying to figure that one out but just wasn't making any connections as to what it might have been...serves me right for reading posts at 4 a.m.!

I'll just add my two cents worth of thanks for the updates as well. I can only imagine how hard it must be to find the time on top of everything else you're dealing with right now, Jim, but it's greatly appreciated -first thing I look for each time I come on here.

last update for evening....Larry's surgery to insert rod, plate and screws was a success.....he will have limited motion with up and down motion but we think left to right will be good. For the first time in the last 8 grueling days, the dr said, "we are hoping for a full recovery" that's great news

He has a great son and family to support him and one way or another I WILL be at that barbecue.

Also, I've been wanting everyone to know how much we appreciate the prayers, thoughts and calls. I wish I could be a little more specific with what's going on, but I just cant right now - Hope you all understand. If you have specific questions, please PM me and I'll do my best to answer them.

I've developed such a "love/Hate" relationship with the ICU. One day your news from them is awesome, then the next day there's a setback. It's just killing me sometimes.

But I do know we'll be having a celebratory BBQ one day soon if I have anything to say about it!!

For sure, Jim. I can't even begin to imagine what a roller coaster ride this must be for you and others, along with the unimaginable trauma. You have been so thoughtful in keeping us up to date. Hang in there Jim. I remember 5 1/2 years ago when my dad was in ICU for 7 weeks after he fell in his apartment and was found by church friends after 3 days. I would sit day after day with him being in medicated coma w/o being able to help him. He opened his eyes one day when the nurse was bathing him and tried to kick me out. It was the first time I had seen him open his eyes and I was upset with her. Many of the Drs said he was tough and that sounds just like Larry. He is tough and it isn't his time. The healing might be slow and it may drive you crazy not being able to help but he will be back in his own time. I can feel it. Thank God he has you and his family to support him.

Nothing new to report the last few days.. In fact we're kinda in a holding pattern. He's being treated for the infection and there's been a slight heart problem the Doc's are successfully addressing. Will post more as it comes but for now, I guess no news is good news.

Thanks again everyone! Keep the faith!!

Continued prays for Larry and his family.

The Wife and I went for a short ride yesterday, and as I was riding along I remembered that I bought my floor Boards from Larry back in May of 07. Which made me think of how I have interacted with, and been blessed in knowing so many people (like Larry) because of this Forum.

Omnipotent and eternal God, the everlasting Salvation of those who believe, hear us on behalf of Thy sick servant, Larry, for whom we beg the aid of Thy pitying mercy, that, with his bodily health restored, he may give thanks to Thee in Thy church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

I don't know Larry Sheppard but I know what it's like to endure recovery of a crash. His injuries are worse than those I sustained but because I went through it I think about him and his family all the time and like you others check the site several times daily just to see if there is some news. I hope and pray with all earnesty that he will recover and be rejoined with his family and friends very soon. And that one day I'll get to actually make that Georgia rally and meet Larry and some of you guys personally. God is able to restore Larry if He wills it therefore, I am touching and agreeing with all who call on the LORD on his behalf. My thoughts are ever with Larry and his family, especially Jim who was there when it happened, and continue to be with you throughout this process. God Bless you Sheppard family.

There's not much to post unfortunately. Larry fought hard but it looks as though He may not make it. It has been a difficult walk for us and we greatly appreciate the prayers, positive thoughts, concern and love. Like you, we check this forum multiple times because we gain strength from you all. For days now, we have not known what to pray but have been asking the Holy Spirit to groan for us. If there are changes, we will certainly let you know. Thanks again for all your love.

Well...it's a new day....Jim and I are totally exhausted.....we left the hospital earlier and low and behold Larry looked better......remember....we are no where near being out of the woods......however, the dr. did tell us not to give up on hope just yet.....we took that as encouragement. I have never been on such an emotional roller coaster. Please keep doing whatever it is that you are doing for he has sustained 19 days of critical condition in ICU.

Hey Everybody.. 1st, thanks to Rhonda for logging on here and updating as much as she has.. It's been just to hard for me to do it much..

My Dad is in very critical condition. He's stable, but very critical.

We had a meeting with some Doctors last Thursday afternoon. As it was explained to us, he has 5 major issues they are trying to address. As they work on one thing, something else comes up and then they work on that. While working on that, something else comes up and they work on that.. It's hard to explain really. Kind of like a leaking dam, once they plug one leak, another one pops up somewhere else. These 5 major problems are taxing my Dad. He can't have a 6th issue come up or it could be devastating. He's holding his own as it stands for now with all the medications. His back surgery has been postponed for now, and I'm not sure when they plan to address it. The most important thing obviously is to keep him alive, and thats what they're doing.

There really hasn't been any improvements or good news relayed to us by the medical staff in days. He's just holding steady for now, and I'm not sure whats next. We do have another meeting on Monday to cover whats happened this weekend. Once we have the meeting, I'll try to get on and post an update.

My Mom is holding her own fairly well. My brother and I are helping her with needs and taking her where ever she needs to go. I've told her about everyone wanting to know how she is, and she's very touched by everybody's concern.

Keep the prayers coming, they sure are helping!!

What a difference a day makes!

Todays visit with my Dad was outstanding! It's the 1st time where I've felt confident that he's going to make it. I'm very guarded and cautious about it, but I really feel like he is.

Rhonda and I met with his Kidney doctor today, and the Doc is happy with some of the readings, etc. that he keeps up with. Although the numbers are in the Bad Range, they are dropping, and getting closer to where they need to be. It's also the 1st time this Doc has said we've got a long road ahead of us. Beats what they've been preparing us for!

We still have a long ways to go, but at least there is hope! I know it'll take a long time, I really do, but I so wish he could come home soon like of you do.

We'll do our best to keep everybody up to date!

Keep the prayers coming!!

Jim

Rhonda posted this on Facebook this morning.... please pray for the family

Pray for our family. Larry was moved out of icu yesterday and released to hospice care. It has been a long and difficult road for all of us. Trying to have grace but that's not always easy. I do pray we all become a little less distracted as we drive. When I was 16, all I had was a am/fm radio and that was sufficient. I worry we have to many gadgets in our cars. Lives are at stake when we get in our cars. I ask that we all slow down a bit, talk less on phone and drive more cautiously. This has been a lifechanging event for all.

Wait, what? Hospice? The last update (other than correcting his age) was positive. What happened?

The last time Jim posted Drs talked to the family about possible brain damage. That has been a week ago. We need to understand they may not always have time to update us. Plus family is under a tremendous amount of distress.

I understand all that, I just missed the connection between possible brain damage and hospice. The former doesn't necessary lead to the latter.

They don;t keep you in ICU in a hopstial forever. I went through that with my dad. After ICU for about 4 weeks he went to long term ICU then after that Reahb nursing home.

Sad news to hear our friend has taken a turn for the worst.
I think about Larry everyday. I like to think I can ride pretty well, guess we all do but I could never pull away from Larry no matter the difficulty. You look back and Larry was in your mirror,50mph,60mph,70mph in the twisties, right on your azz, hahaha. By gosh he is one great rider.
I remember fondly the year I led everyone over the Cherohala Skyway during the Georgia Rally, 2008 maybe. We carved that mountain up that day, broke my speedo cable at about 7000rpm's. Larry had the biggest shiteating grin when we stopped at the bottom. Good times with a good friend, friends.

I'm still pulling for him and hope to see him again wearing that light blue coverall and smoking,non-filter cigs and riding the latest bike he just purchased.

Ha. That light blue outfit is his poll barn leisure wear.

I guess it was at the 2010 Ga. Rally, I was kind of surprised how many on the site was down on the new T-birds. I came early to meet up for a ride. Larry was always was one of the first riders to the meet up points. He looked at my bike and said, "I don't know why everyone is making such a fuss about the T-bird it's a Triumph isn't it?" I said yeah. It made my day that I had received the "LarryShep seal of approval".

Good morning everyone...sorry we haven't updated lately. We are a bit exhausted. Last week was a terrible week. On Monday, Larry was removed from respirator and into a private room. He has a trach which makes it a little easier for him to breathe. The biggest problem we have now is the brain injury. Not sure how all of this happened but the drs believe when he arrested twice, Larry depleted his body of oxygen therefore causing a tremendous amount of damage. He also hit his head on the car....not sure how much that contributed to the brain injury. He does not know us and is in a total vegetation state. You can image how painful this is for Jimmy. His Dad was at our house the week before the accident watching Fox news with me (i'll keep those conversations private ) and so strong to see him in this condition is just heart wrenching. Please continue to lift us up in prayer, send positive thoughts and whatever else you are doing. It has kept us going. He has had the best care and he is comfortable and not in pain. I have been angry for 14 years the way God took my Dad suddenly in a car accident 14 years ago this past October, but after going thru this ordeal with my sweet husband, I am no longer angry. I never want anyone I know or love go thru this again. We have much to be grateful and wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

I saw my cousin back in 02 come through a brain injury. It's tragic to witness and even more when it's an immediate family member. But he came through it. Yes he sustained permanent damage. And he's a different person. But he lives a quality life even with having gone through it. We laugh, tell jokes and stories from our childhood. But there was a time when that all seemed impossible.

I say that to say this. Don't lose hope. The Bible teaches us that with men things are impossible but with God, nothing is impossible. It's true, he may never come out of this. But it is just as possible that he will have a limited if not a full recovery. Only time will tell.

When I went to see my cousin and all he could do was kick like a baby, I still spoke to him as if he heard every word. I believe he did. I knew that somewhere beyond whatever had disconnected him from us that he was still there.

So you guys, I know you are doing this already because you just seem to be the kind of family who would, keep talking to him even though it seems he doesn't hear. Keep hoping for him and just as importantly keep praying. Pray with him, pray over him, anoint him with oil, call in the elders to do the same. Touch him, tell him stories about the people he knows, read to him, play his favorite music and sermons from his favorite teachers. I can't guarantee any results but at least its something you can do. Finally, give him over to God. The doctors may have found their limits but nothing is impossible with God.

You all are continually in my thoughts and prayers. May God's peace abide with you.

Gang.. As you saw earlier, My Dad did pass peacefully this afternoon.

October 8th was an absolutely stunning day for riding. I had picked up my bike from being repaired and was excited about riding again with him It was supposed to be a short ride, but everyone that know Larry, there is no such thing. We met in his driveway like always, talked for about 14 seconds, and he fired it up and said "lets go!" and after a quick nod to my Mom, he flipped that visor down and away we went.

The short ride turned out to be one of his favorite routes, the ride by Lake Burton. And thats not a short run to me at all. It was okay though, I was having a GREAT time even though I had chores at home that needed my attention. After we made the turn, we stopped at the overlook for a Smoke, and like always, he tapped my jacket and bummed yet another off me. We took pictures of each other, and decided to head on home. The sky was as blue as his eyes. We made our way to south of Dahlonega and pulled into the Chevron at Highway 9 and Aruia Rd. He bummed another smoke, and we just sat there shooting the ****** and watching traffic go by. We threw the helmets on, and he said to me before we headed off, "Thank ya babe! I sure enjoyed it!" I told him we'd do it again before it got to cold.. "To cold? Ain't you got a jacket? It's never to cold to ride!" I just grinned and nodded my head to him as I knew it wasn't worth the sake of argument to disagree. We lit off, and I pulled out of Chevron 1st, with him behind me. I was always ahead of him when we rode together. There was a comfort to me to be able to look in my mirror and see him back there. As we made our way south on Hwy 9, he suddenly shot past me on my left side. There was no reason for this. For a brief moment, I thought I'd pass him myself; how could I let a 76 year old guy get me like that? I didn't attempt it.. I just enjoyed the ride and watched him as we made our way south.. Then the accident happened. The car pulled out and He just couldn't avoid it. I locked down my back brake and felt my bike slide out to my right. I let off, and the bike righted itself and I rode the centerline down the side of the car that hit him.

After an assessment by EMS, he was transported to North Fulton ER. It was here when he suffered his 1st arrest. The ER didn't have a Heart-Lung bypass so he was life-flighted to Atlanta Medical Center. During the eight minute helicopter ride, he suffered yet another arrest. This one, as we would later find out, caused a massive amount of brain damage due to there being no oxygen in his blood. When he landed at AMC, he was dead on the pad. They brought him back after being down approx 140 seconds. He went straight to surgery where the torn descending aorta valve was repaired. Later, he'd have a stint placed and two surgeries on his neck. Doctors were very hopeful for a complete recovery, and things were reported to us in a very positive manner though we did have our ups and downs which seemed daily. As the eased him off the pain med's on about the 16th day, the noted that he wasn't responding like he should have. It was then evident to the Doc's the damage was severe. We'd later find out that when he was down the second time, the body used up the oxygen in his blood at a faster than normal rate due to the trauma he suffered. To be sure, we waited for a while to ensure there wasn't a mistake in what they found. There was no mistake.

On Monday the 7th, we decided as a family to remove him from the Ventilator. We were told he'd go quickly after that, but once again, he proved them wrong. He fought and fought until this afternoon. His final words to my at Mom at North Fulton was "What a beautiful day and for it to end like this." My Mom told him it was okay, and that she loved him as he was eased into a sleep from the pain meds. It was the last time he'd ever speak.

Dad, it was a beautiful day. And knowing that today, this day, you're with our Lord makes it even more beautiful. It was a beautiful day to have a last ride with you. I'm blessed that I was with you, and even though I saw the entire accident unfold right in front of me, it was a beautiful day.

That ride was my final ride. I'm happy it was with him.

It was a beautiful day

To keep with my Dad's final wishes, he'll be cremated and his remains will be flown to Australia this Friday for internment. Many of you know my Mom is an Aussie, and he wanted them to be together forever.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date; probably after the Thanksgiving Holiday. Once I get the date and location down, I'll be sure to post it here.

Thanks for all the love and support you have provided Rhonda and I here on the forum, in emails and phone calls. We're so blessed to be part of such a supportive group.

Be sad for a day or two, but rejoice in the fact that we have a new angel watching over us!

My Mom wanted me to be sure to let you know she's holding her own just fine.

With so much love to you all,

Jim, Rhonda and Anna Grace Sheppard

I am touched by what you have shared here - it's very beautiful. I realise that calling that beautiful sort of sounds incongruous in the circumstances but your love for your Dad and your grief and the way you spent that ride together and the hope you have in God really is beautiful - thank you for sharing. And please accept my deep condolences for your loss.

I'm glad he got to make that run again.. without bicycles this time. He always liked that stop at Popcorn Gap..
I can't help but smile when I think of the grin he must have been wearing as we pushed on through scattering peanut heads that day.

I'm glad we got that one more ride in as it had been awhile but sorry we never made it back up to Cherohala as we had planned.. s'okay though, I'll make it for him.

I couldn't begin to guess how many miles I rode with Larry over the 9 or so years... but it was many.

I remember when you, Robert & Larry rode with Di and I up to Cherohala and I stopped short in front of him after missing the turn ... it took a helluvva rider to not clean my clock and had it not been for his skills (and probabably a good bit of luck), we would have likely ended up in a pile. He was the best I've ever ridden with and and I learned much from his experience and I've never seen a man more comfortable on a motorcycle.... he truly loved to ride.

He was a good friend and a great riding partner and the road will be a much lonelier place without him.

It was shock for me to read this just now. Thanks Jim for sharing the story of your last ride with your Dad. I only knew Larry from the few times I attended the GA. rally but I feel like I am a better person for it. I will not forget him. I really appreciate the effort it took to keep us informed, with all you were going through at the time. Please know that you and your family have my continued support and prayers.

Here's to you Larry!

Of my many memories of Larry, I will always cherish our first ride through the Cherohala, with a brand new passenger on the back of my Tiger. Jennifer had never been on any ride like that before that day, and I am thankful that she got to see Larry take those curves like he owned them (he did). Each time that I ride those hills, I try to be more like Larry and Chy. I know that will never happen, but it has been one of the lights of my last ten years trying.

As I sit in tears over my keyboard, I want to thank Larry again for being one of the people who made me feel more at home in the BA.com family and as a motorcyclist. He didn't have to be my friend, and I am sure as hell greatful that he was. I will miss him every day, and will think of him first each time that I start my Triumph.

Let's ride more often and more fully. Larry would demand it.

first let me start by saying, my condolences to your family this is a very sad day for us that knew Larry. Like Ryan said, i sit here with a tear in my eye thinking about the man and how he made me feel just being around him. when you wrote the story of that day i could see him tapping my shirt pocket to see if i had a spare smoke in there and i would always laugh a little and ask if he was old enough and did his parents know he was smokin. i must also say as others have, i have never ridden with a better rider, i remember it had to have been the first or second yr of the Ga. rally when i saw him pass somebody on a outside horseshoe turn all the while staying in his lane and never missing a beat leaned over like he was on a crotch rocket, what a site!! i knew right then that this guy wasnt playing and when i asked him about it he just gave a small chuckle and bummed a smoke and said something like, these bikes were made to be ridden. we will all surley miss his sausage come may and the Ga. rally is not going to be the same without him. he is one of those people you meet in life that you will never forget and always look back with fond memories of. the only bright spot i hold onto is that he went doing what he loved doing and that is about all any of us can hope for. know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers and that we hope to see you and your family come may. i'm thinkin Steve Mcqueen or Gary Nixon or somebody just needed another sombody to ride with and who better than him.

Ditto that, I had the pleasure to ride behind him during my first Georgia rally for a little while... I don't remember how but we had gotten separated from the group and I ended up behind Larry. I learned a lot that day.

Jim, Rhonda, Anna Grace Sheppard and the whole clan, Lynn and I send our sincere condolences. Just last night we where talking of Larry. How Lynn thought of him as one of those folks who you might have known before. Easy, opinionated, and best of all: kind. What an outlook on life. Larry never said ride it like you stole it, but he just did! All his farkels. All the gifts. His and Kathy’s time spent preparing for the numerous rally feast. These acts of kindness will always be with us.

This morning the news reached me. I went to the bedroom laid next to Lynn and cried. Only now, almost 8 hours later, can words rise above the anguish of learning of Larry’s passing. Larry was a man of few pretenses; a unique, lovable Larry. Larry with a darling wife and a handsome family. A man who had a sixth sense about him.

Rest in peace my friend. Continue to shelter those you love as you did on that fateful day. As Jim stated, “I was always ahead of him when we rode together. There was a comfort to me to be able to look in my mirror and see him back there. As we made our way south on Hwy 9, he suddenly shot past me on my left side. There was no reason for this.” I see a reason for his taking point that day.

Larry was old school. Was of a generation when a man’s word was gold. He wouldn’t put up with foolishness. In his own way he was an innocent man. Full of spit and gravel, full of love.

"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal."
~ Unknown

“For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?”
~ Kahlil Gibran

Out of focus a bit but I can’t help but think of Larry smiling!

Words cannot express the gratitude, appreciation and love I've felt from all of you in response to the posting of my Dads death. It's made the last 24 hours easier to cope with.

We've made arrangements for a Memorial Service, and I've started a new thread with that information.

So many of you have called, emailed and sent personal messages, I just cannot respond to them all. They all mean so much to all of us. Thank you just isn't enough..

Looking back, I've only spent a handful of days with Larry over the span of the last 7 or 8 years yet his passing has affected me deeply.

To me he was always quick with a smile and a friendly word but the one memory that will be always front and centre for me will be Larry riding in front of me.

One of many beautiful, tight, twisty Georgia mountain roads. Trees growing in close, their leaves creating spotted patterns along the road from the bright sun above, offset by the cool snap in the air.

As large brown UPS trucks pass us going up the mountain a cold sweat rolls down my back, I fight to keep up. In front of me rides Larry. Riding, relaxed looking like he might be falling asleep.

Larry is one of the people that taught me by example how to ride and for that I will always be grateful. Thank you Larry, I hope I may be able to ride with you again one day and to see what your latest "last bike" is.

He was a good man & will be missed by many.

I remember my first GA rally like it was yesterday. We had all gathered up @ Danny's & Larry came pulling in wearing the "suit". I thought to myself we are going to be waiting for this old dude to catch up with us all day long boy was I wrong!

we should do this every weekend!

i've been avoiding logging on to
our site since i got the news from
yota -- for logging on meant that i would be ready to
click the keys into place -- to create the words
that have been swarming around my head and heart
for the last two days.
now that i'm here i find that i am not ready.

i will say that Larry and Kathy made my first GA rally possible.
they opened their home, gave me a Speedmaster to ride, and in
essence brought my BA family to life -- like the pages of a life-sized pop-up book.

for all of this, all i can muster right now is
thank you and Namastè(to which Larry would
certainly roll his eyes and grumble)

you are all in my heart, in my thoughts, and i will
always hold you high.

shari

I think part of a man's measure is the mark he leaves. Judging by the responses contained above, Larry Sheppard left a very large mark.

Peace and understanding to all of his family and friends.

Even though I never got a chance to really get to know Larry, but only meet him briefly, it warms my heart to see how many people he touched, just on this website alone! My heartfelt condolences on your loss Jim, to you and your entire family.

Chy was kind enough to get us started on the memorial page for Larry. If you would like to add pictures or remembrances to this page, send me a PM. I would be honored to add them.

I just do not know what to say. Larry was one of the finest, most honest souls I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I have just now learned of his passing and I am just sick about it. I hope his family are doing alright and I am glad he went out doing what he loved. I am sure where ever he is, he has his knees in the breeze and has found someone to bum a smoke from. Godspeed Brother.
