Good ol' Bob Dylan thought about this very topic many, many years back... this is what he had to say.

If Dogs Run Free

If dogs run free, then why not we
Across the swooping plain?
My ears hear a symphony
Of two mules, trains and rain
The best is always yet to come
That’s what they explain to me
Just do your thing, you’ll be king
If dogs run free

If dogs run free, why not me
Across the swamp of time?
My mind weaves a symphony
And tapestry of rhyme
Oh, winds which rush my tale to thee
So it may flow and be
To each his own, it’s all unknown
If dogs run free

If dogs run free, then what must be
Must be, and that is all
True love can make a blade of grass
Stand up straight and tall
In harmony with the cosmic sea
True love needs no company
It can cure the soul, it can make it whole
If dogs run free

--------------------
Live to love, love to live.

Anyone who thinks people who let dogs run free should be smacked should be smacked. I own 3 acres of mostly woods and my dogs keep to my back yard of about 3/4 or so of an acre and don't bother anyone that isn't where they don't belong. They can see people walk up the road out front and keep to the back yard. There are no fences of any kind except a privacy fence the has 2 drive through opening and ends at the edge of my woods on both sides. They don't chase wildlife that happens in the yard. So I see no reason to put them on a chain or leash. When I yell "in the house" They bolt for the back door and stand there and wait for me.

Hey cool your jets. Hes talking bout folks who allow there dogs out into the street so they can be run down by autos. If you got the room and the dogs don't go into the road or dig in the niehbors trash good. My Grandpa had a huge farm, and the puppies ran free but was not in any road danger. Nor could they damage the property of others

My jets are cool, was just pointing out the blanket statement the illustrating that in many cases dogs can run free. I used to live on a busy highway with neighbors and my dogs still ran free. They knew not to go in the road or even near it. All my neighbors owned dogs and we all knew each other. Their dogs wear as likely to be found in my house lounging with my dogs as vise versa. Would have been better to say those who let their dogs run in the road or bother the neighbors. If I had dogs who went near the road or didn't listen then they would be restrained for their own safety.

Yep Ian, I suppose all is good, UNLESS you happen to live next door to dog owners like this family lives next door to....

Even my cats dont run free. I built a cat park with tunnels and stuff so they go outside the house but are still enclosed and cant kill the native wildlife or become a nuisance on the street.

Hey Ian, are your dogs actually alive... I dont think ive ever seen a dog that wouldnt chase a chipmunk or other furry fun critter, and at your old house didnt you have any neighbors that lived across the street, you said all the dogs in the neighborhood would visit and visa verse, that would put your dogs in the street... People get very defensive about this subject, especially the people who do let their dogs loose..i have alot of customers who said my dogs never leaves the property, but those dogs are no longer with us, and that kid must have been teasing my dog for him to run out there and bite him, or that guy had no right to shoot my dog even if he was on his property.
Ive herd all the lines, i have been dealing with dogs and their owners for 25 years.
Bottom line is people need to take responsibility for their actions, if your dog causes an accident its YOUR fault not the dogs, what if someone died in that accident, i wouldn't want to live with that...
Maybe you can guaranty your dogs NEVER, EVER leave your property but most people cant make that statement.
If i ever go down on my bike because of a dog in the road, the owner really needs to hope that i cannot get up and make it to their house right then, there's a strong possibility they'd get a beating right on their front lawn. I know me pretty well, and have seen me do things like that...
It was a blanket statement, but people who let their dogs run loose more than likely will have or cause problems.
