Hey, I was thinking about a cool vertical license plate holder, but I understand they're not legal everywhere. My question is, (probably dumb), if I have one and I'm in a state where they're not legal... uh, do I get ticketed? Now that I see it in print, it looks stupid, but I still have to ask...

Do you mean like you have one in NJ and it's legal in NJ, but you ride to PA and they are illegal there? Or just as obvious as you sait it...

States are supposed to recognize other states' laws, but they don't always do it. It's called "reciprocacy". It's that way with helmet laws: if you're riding through a helmet law state without a helmet (and you're from a non-helmet law state), that state's law enforcement is not supposed to ticket you.
If it's a legal gray (grey?) area, and they do ticket you, it'll be a hassle for you to fight the ticket (which they already know).
Here's a possibility: make your own plate bracket, which can move between vertical and horizontal! Then, check out the state laws of the other states you'll be riding into, and move the plate accordingly. Or, just ride with it horizontal when you're out of your home state, and go back vertical when you get home.

Well, we are Brit Bike guys, so I'll go with "grey". I can't imagine why it's a big deal to have it vertical, but some states don't like it, I guess. Sure looks cool, though.

Some states do not like it because it is tougher for the cops to read it quicky, and it makes it tougher for photo radar to get a picture.

The GA State Patrol wait like vultures on the Fl/GA state line for non-helmeted riders to cross into GA. Every time I cross, I see bikers stopped before the border putting on helmets and bikers that didn't, stopped after the border getting tickets.
As far as I know, reciprocity does not extend to motor vehicles laws. I could be wrong, it has happened once or twice!

In the People's Republic of Virginia the Blue Crew will nail a biker that does not have a front brake (not a problem for most TBA riders), and also if two bikes are side-by-side in the same lane. State law prohibits two motor vehicles "sharing" a lane, hence its illegal to "lane split." What I have seen is when you pull up to a stop light. Most officers won't bother you if you are side-by-side until you pull away, but technically even at a red light you could get nailed if in a jurisdiction hungry for fines for the town's piggybank. Also, them "sex lights" of various colors... do NOT have a blue light visible on your bike.

I am pretty sure the reciprocacy thing only applies to equipment/set-up of the bike (licence plates, exhaust, etc), not things like wearing a helmet.
