The article says that Team Oregon (Oregon's state sanctioned motorcyle training) stole MSF's stuff. It maybe true, but the real reason for the suit is that there has been a battle for a couple years between the State of Pregon and MSF. The state will not reconize training by MSF as legitimate training and will only accept Team Oregon's training. MSF has been trying to get the state (mostly DMV) to reconize both. With oregon being a government controlled state (private enterprise and private people have no say in much of anything) it will never happen, unless MSF wins this lawsuit.
In my opinion there is no reason why both should not exist. Especially since there is almost a year waiting list for people to get into the Team Oregon classes. There are MSF classes available in Oregon, but if you took your MSF card to dMV to get your motorcycle endorsement they will not accept it.

Soren,
thanks for sharing this. so many folks have depended upon MSF for their endorsement. is there any way an ABATE chapter can help work this out?

From what I understand ABATE and the AMA have been staying out of this battle. But, maybe things will change. It seems that more and more I become an anarchist (again) against the oregon government.

It seems to me that Oregon wants the motorcycle course to be a profit center. Are they really interested in motorcycle safety or making money. In NH the state run course uses MSF and you can also take private MSF courses as well. NH charges $85 for the 2.5 day course which I think is a bargain. You can take the MSF course from private companies for around $300. NH recognizes the private MSF courses.

If you have ever worked in government, you know it's all about bureaucratic turf protection and self promotion. It mostly has to do with who gets funded and often has little to do with what the people want or need.

I've never worked in the pubilc sector but I can see your point. They have to justify their existance, thus, they try to creating a perpetual need for their service.

It's too bad. In NJ, which IMHO is one of the most politically corrupt states in America, the MSF course was FREE through the DMV if you could get an opening. The demand is high. If you pass the MSF course you got a license waiver. Sweet!
Hope MSF wins this battle. The course in invaluable and should be mandatory for all riders.

PA SUCKS in most ways ,taxes , noteries , shabby roads , etc... But at least in PA the safety course is FREE plus if you take that course you don't have to wear a helmet even as a beginner. Not that any of that applies to me I've been riding for aover 30 yrs. and 25 of that legally!! LOL
