Goodonya Nick. I've just signed. Why are you interested in what's happening in Aus though?

Cos what happens elsewhere normally ends up happening here as well (especially if it means more ways that Big Brother can spy on us!!)

There may be more to this..........From this weeks edition of Motorcycle News. Page 5 The Mole
HAVE THEY GOT INSIDE INFORMATION?
“Honda have just filed a patent for a new type of front mounted number plate for motorcycles. Now I may be jumping to conclusions, but as far as I’m aware there are no public plans to force bikes to use front plates anywhere in the world – although this patent hints that maybe Honda is aware of forthcoming legislation that hasn’t yet been made public......”
And it looks as though the police will be out in force during April.....targeting bikers....one force will be stopping bikers who are displaying small number plates......apparently this makes your bike mechanically unsafe............ Details of what each force will looking for can also be found in this weeks edition .....26/03/08.

Thats messed up, wonder if it would be a pedestrian slicer?
Here in the US some states require a front plate on cars but even those states don't require one on a bike.

A little OT - here in the fascist regime of Soviet CT, we all had to surrender and change our plates over to a reflective style. I guess the US DOT's reflective standards aren't good enough. It didn't matter if your plates were one month old or what have you. If they were the wrong color, they were no good.
I'm all for government creating jobs, except when those jobs amount to fiddle f' around for no good reason. [/rant!]

I would think that the best defense would be to point out that these are detrimental to pedestrians health when they step out in front of a motorcycle and, (this should pull some weight) since it is quite windy in some areas of OZ, especially areas where poor people who only have a motorbike for transportation live, the effects of a numberplate would create an undue handling hazard.

Or, they decided that to patent this and then buy legislation requiring it would be profitable. There was a big stink in CA decades ago when they passed a law requiring retrofitting a particularly ineffective "pollution control" device that was manufactured only by a company owned by the governors son in law.

Well, look at the bright side of all this....maybe having to bolt a license plate on the from of your motorcycles will help reduce the number of cagers who make those left turns right in front of you(of course that would be right turns to you blokes downunder) which always makes those meetings with their passenger-side door handles such a "pleasant experience".
Yeah! That's IT! This new regulation will make ALL THOSE "meetings" a thing of the past, because of course ALL the cagers out there will NOW see us coming in the opposite direction.
YEAH!!! SURE!!! They'll all have NO REASON WHATEVER for this to happen anymore!!!!
(riiiiiiiiight!)

They made us trade in plates here in PA too for the new colors and reflective. My family didn't like it we considered the old plate as kind of a badge showing we were locals not transplants.
