A Couple Guzzi Facts
      #375374 - 02/24/09 09:12 AM

I got this in my email today from Motorcycle Riders Club of America:

The Italian V-Twin Company

Harley Davidson was already the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world with dealers in 67 countries by the Spring of 1921 when another company opened its doors. They would develop a twin engine that would give Harley a run for its money, gain notoriety for both style and comfort and at one time, become standard issue for the LAPD. You might be surprised by who it was: Moto Guzzi.

Often overlooked, Moto Guzzi is Europe's oldest continuous production motorcycle manufacturer and responsible for developments like:

The first rear swing arm suspension in 1928. It was tested and promoted by a hair-raising ride from Italy to the Arctic Circle.

The first V8 engine in a motorcycle was crammed into a Guzzi "Grand Prix" in 1955. Its 500cc engine pushed the rider to victory at 178 mph, a top speed that was unheard of at the time and which took 30 years to be reached again.

The first production automatic transmission motorcycle, called the "Convert" and a slew of other testing and development items that made Moto Guzzi a 60's and 70's phenomenon envied by café crawlers and the motorbike geeks.

Didn't they pioneer linked brakes, too?

Make that "production motorcycle". People were cramming the Ford V8-60 into Indian, Ace and Henderson 4s as soon as the first ones were available from the boneyards.
