So I finally got my Sceptre Gold baffles, which bring the exhaust down to 1.5" for the last 8". Not sure how I feel about the sound yet, they are not as deep, and seem to be a little more sharp sounding. However, the new back pressure improved throttle response a lot, so I'm pretty excited about that.
I have a couple videos with sound
Original http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FQekM35Zjy4
With Gold inserts http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=yG6zWoojHbc
here are the Sceptre stock inserts (about 24" long), the clean one is the new design

and here is the 8" Gold insert wrapped with fiberglass instead of steel wool

I'm sure they will get a little bit of the deep sound back as the fiberglass breaks in. I may decide to sometime rewrap the inserts with stainless wool and put them back in.

I kinda like the sound better with the gold inserts.
(Interesting you should post this as I get ready to start a thread about my SS baffles.)

It's not a bad sound at all, just not as deep at idle. I have not been on a road test yet, heat index in the triple digits today.

Is this photo taken with a very wide angle lens - because these appear to be cones - not tubes. But I'm guessing it's an optical illusion. Here I am thinking this is a muffler design I've not seen before (cone shaped perf) - then it dawned on me about the illusion.
You say the new gold pipe is smaller but in the photo it looks larger than the old one ???
I prefer the Gold sound. Why not try wrapping the perf with a layer of Stainless wool and then a layer of glass. That way you get the best of both worlds. The stainless wool closest to the perf minimizes the decay and blow-out of the glass and the glass absorbs more of the high frequencies. So you get a nice deep sound that doesn't need repacking as often as glass on its own.

The pic above was just a quick one I took while the baffles were leaning up against the tailgate of my truck, I really was trying to get the ends more than anything so I could show the difference. The Gold insert is only 8" long, the original baffle is about 24". It's hard to show size without another visual reference. They are definitely not cone shaped, just on an angle.

Ok, so they are definitely better on the highway, might be able to get away with a full face helmet with no earplugs. Takes just enough of the bite out of higher rpm noise, but it still rings out when I hammer down.
