I personally wouldn't cross-link the carbs. I'd cap them.
What about linking front to back? Same carb pressure/vacuums so shouldn't be an issue.

Sure, no issues with that, however I still prefer the caps. With small plastic zip-tie stays.

Thats what I was thinking I should do, but does this mean I need to redo the mix settings and balancing?

Take it from Mr. Lazy, if you're not balancing your carbs at least every oil or air filter change you're not getting the full performance out of your bike.

Mine are linked this way. I think it runs better than with 4 SCs.

On the old Meridan Triumphs with Amal carbs most have a tube between the "nipples" on the two intake manifolds, there are no "nipples" on the air filter side. On our modern bikes I use the condoms, but if I was to use tubing I would do it between the different carbs like the old bikes. Putting a tube on the same side seems crazy, theoretically and probably for real, you are pulling freash air from the air box side of the carb and dumping it in to the post carb air-fuel mixture in the intake manifold between the carb and the head. There is air by passing the carb, how do you adjust a carb? If using tubing it should be between the different sides of the twin IMO.

No, as the carb side port is aft of the venturi.
