I had an interesting dog story not too long ago. My wife and I were riding and I looked over and saw a large Shepherd and a boxer running at full steam to cut me off on a rural road. The Shepherd must have been watching me instead of where he was going as he ran headfirst into a gas meter wide assed open. Upon hearing the loud yelp the boxer turned and went the other way. As soon as the Shepherd got up he too went the other way as fast as possible. I suppose they thought I did something to the Shepherd. As the long road ended at a state park I had to go by on the way out but they never left the driveway. Alls well that ends well.

I like dogs but that's funny as hell right there!

All this discussion and no practical methods of dog avoidance? Seems to me (and from experience) that one needs to take away the two advantages of dogs:Speed and vector. Get them to trot or at least slow down. That means you have to slow down. When the dog gets amidships, stretch the throttle cables!

For a pack of dogs, hum, might have to reconsider that approach. For dogs that are sitting in the middle of the road, slowing down and gunning it still works. For those canines on the road in a blind curve, all bets are off.

What really sucks is after you successfully avoid a couple of dogs, you find out the street you are on is a dead end.

Just drag a stray cat bout 20 yards behind you and they'll leave you and your bike alone.

This is the best advice that has been given in my opinion. If this doesn't work then incorporate the heel of your boot into this equation along with a 3,000 to 5,000 rpm increase in a span of 2 - 4 seconds. The tough-guy bark will turn into a crying home to momma whine!

Dogs? Try this... the other day a friend while riding was confronted by a friggin' elk all bent out of shape because of, don't you know it... rutting season. Turns out the animal tried to outrun and therefore cut off his rival... that being my friend + wife on a Yamaha Venture. The wife part of the equation said she could have reached out and touched said elk. Now an elk is a BIG animal. That would have been scary, riding alone beside an animal twice the size of person and machine, dog gone it!!
