Thinkin out loud here. So, the battery in my 02 America came with it, more than 4 years ago. I'm usually a careful kind of fella (read slightly paranoid), so I'm thinkin that it could crap out on me somewhere, probably 100 miles or so from home. So, to be proactive, I'm thinking about replacing it, even though I've had no trouble with it so far. Yeah, here's the thing. Remember the last time I was proactive? Sure ya do, hence the thread with the clutch cable problems. Changed a perfectly good, but aged cable, and what'd I get?! That experience is making me drag my feet on a new battery. What do ya think, O Wise Ones?

I never replace a battery until it stops holding a charge.. First time I notice that it's struggling to give me a start, which is usually the first sign of trouble, it gets replaced. If yours is still going strong, I'd leave it until it starts showing signs of needing retirement.
Cheers, Brad

My battery came with my bike from the factory in 04 and so far so good. It sits in an unheated shed all winter with no battery tender on it and so far fires up when ever I want it to. Replaced Wendys in Niagara Falls, it was dead the morning we were leaving and we jump started the bike. Had to bump start it every time after. Once we got to the hotel I went to Wal Mart and got a new one and swapped it out, hers is also an 04.

I can't speak highly enough about the Shorai lithium iron potassium battery. 1/2 of the size, 1/3 of the weight and 10 times the power of the Yuasa. Tolerates much more deep cycling too. 1/3 more expensive but twice the value.

Rich, I'm still running with the original battery that came from the factory on my 2007 BA. I'd say your better off $$/cents to wait until you have an issue with the thing not holding a charge...At least that's what I'm doing.
Point of note....since I got my BA in 2010, I've "cleaned" the cable ends, and battery posts a couple of times, and covered both in dielectric grease.

+1.... I just put one in Karen's bike. Thought the box was empty when the counter guy handed it to me.

I put a new battery in last Sunday morning, too. Interstate/ CycleTron.
I replaced my original after three years, and no sign of trouble. A year and a half later, that new battery was toast. No good reason for that. It was an Interstate, and I replaced it with one, and it lasted until late August, so at least 4, maybe 5 years old. As soon as I got "the sign", I bought another battery.
I see it every day at the dealership. People think just because they jumped it and it started the next time or two that it's going to be okay to ignore it. It's usually the same people who follow their battery story with "I'm overdue for service". It goes hand in hand...

My Frontier Nissan battery had to be charged several time over the course of the last 12 months. Poor thing never gets run too often either. At first I was thinking about the cost of a battery. 80 bucks NFW! Then I thought about how I'll drop $79 on a yuasa without nary a worry in the world. Kind of puts things in perspective eh? (btw, the Frontier has a new wally world special).

I PMd a few of you asking about the Shorai LFX14A1-BS12, I think 163$ w/ overnight shippping. Impatience and the pending wkend got the better of me and just ordered one. Interestingly Bike Bandit has a number of Shorai models, but not the LFX14A1-BS12 or LFX18A1-BS12.
I wonder if any of you guys got the LFX18A1-BS12, or have had occasion or need to use a battery tender or the Shorai "Dedicated Battery Management System" ( SHO-BMS01 ) Them BMS reads very well, but for 80$ or so, I wonder if it is worth it.
Also, Web Bike World has a very nice write up on the Shorai and Ballistic batteries, as well as the BSM.

This my reply to Marcellus PM. Published here for the benefit of readers of this thread.
Hi Marcellus. I highly recommend the Shorai. It hasn't dropped below 13.2v. Excellent battery. I got the 18ah version but the 14ah is also recommended for our bikes and is still 40% better than the stock Yuasa which is 10ah.
Fitting. You need a full battery cover like the full chrome cover or similar My bike came with no battery cover just a 2" vertical chrome strip which held the battery in place but left most of the stock battery exposed. The reason is that the battery is smaller and you need to use the foam packing supplied to pack around the battery. Without the full wrap around cover you will be able to see this packing.
Charger: I use their charger. You can use a regular charger BUT you may NOT use a charger/tender if it has an automatic "desulfation mode", which cannot be turned off. Read their FAQ here. .
