Anybody here ever had a Hodaka?

I've often wondered how well their peculiar gear change system worked. It would seem to be OK as long as the engine didn't produce too much torque and all the parts were properly heat treated.

I had one when I was a kid but I don't know what you mean. Geared very low, wheelie machine.

The guy who came up with that name deserves a medal.

I had a Hodaka 100 Dirt Squirt when I was young. Don't remember anything special about the gear change mechanism. But that thing would go almost anywhere. Even tried to go up a tree one day when I was on it

Had a Super Rat,Wombat and Ace 90 cool bikes but worked kinda clunky. The shifting mechanism was a joke mine had issues all the time.

Maybe it's because I was a kid but I don't remember anything clunky or strange about the shifter but I was happy to have anything at the time.

The way their transmission worked was a bit strange. The gears rode on a hollow shaft with holes bored through it at each gear location. There was a bumpy shaft running through the gear shaft and ball bearings dropped in the holes in that shaft were pushed out by the bumpy shaft to engage the selected gear. Not sure how it kept centrifugal force from spinning the rest of the balls out and engaging all the gears.

I remember a shifter spring inside the cover that would break and you ended stuck in what ever gear it was in.Its been since 1979 when I worked on one of those! Haha so long ago.
