NTSB To Hold Two-Day Forum On Motorcycle Safety
http://www.ntsb.gov/Pressrel/2006/060615.htm
Quote:
Washington, D.C. - The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a two-day public forum on motorcycle safety beginning on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 in Washington, D.C. Board Member Debbie Hersman will preside as Chairman of the forum.
Last year, 4,315 motorcyclists died in crashes and the rate of motorcycle fatalities has increased more than 25 percent since 1997. "At a time when highway fatalities have been decreasing, motorcycle fatalities have continued to increase, both in overall number and in fatality rate," said Member Hersman. "The goal of the public forum is to gather information about ongoing motorcycle safety research and initiatives, as well as safety countermeasures that may reduce the likelihood of motorcycle accidents and fatalities."
During the forum, the NTSB will examine issues raised by a number of recent motorcycle accidents, including the June 12 motorcycle crash involving Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and the June 11 crash involving a motorcycle and a minivan in Williamsport, PA that killed five persons.
NTSB staff will lead technical panel discussions that will examine each major aspect of motorcycle safety, including rider training and licensing, rider protective equipment, vehicle design, and public education of motorists and motorcyclists. Representatives from the motorcycle industry, government, and motorcycling organizations will be invited to give presentations highlighting their perspectives.
The forum will be held in Washington at the NTSB's Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L'Enfant Plaza, SW. An agenda for the forum will be posted on the NTSB's website when available. The general public will be able to observe the forum either in person or by webcast at www.ntsb.gov.

If anyone is going to be in the area to sit in and needs instructions to the NTSB, let me know. 429 LEnfant is at a metro stop. I know a Duc rider who works there. Will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Is everyone at the NTSB so stupid and/or corrupt as to not notice that this just happens to be about the same time that cheap cell phone service came to be? You know, we need a "DUH" emoticon!

A 25% rise is a lot if the number of motorcyclist today was the same as 1997, but it isn't. In the last 9 years the number of registered motorcycles in the US has increased more than 200%. With most of these new bikes being owned by first time riders. So in that light a 25% increase isn't really that bad.

I cant find any solid numbers of how many motorcyclists there were in 1997. But if it is correct that the number of motorcyclists has gone up 200% in the last 10 years, then the 25% rise in fatalities is very misleading. What it means is that the percentage of fatalities based on how many more people are riding has actually decreased.
I wish I could find some numbers to actually do the math.

Here's a link to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics search results for motorcycle related numbers http://search.google.dot.gov/BTS/BTSSear...&bts_only=1
Table 2-22 is for Motorcycle Rider Safety Data. Some interesting numbers and you can even download it in Excel or CSV!

I believe that eventually ABATE and the other freedom of choice motorsickle organizations will have to gather their collective powers and constituency in the states that still do not have helmet laws to combat the oncoming frontal assault by self rightious helmet/safety nazi gestapos.
