Standard vs K&N filters
      #1524 - 01/17/05 04:04 AM

Is there a substantial difference in performance changing from the standard air box/filter to K&N filters? ie is it worth the $$ and effort?

I noticed a big difference, but I also had already put on the Bubs dresser dog pipes. The dyno test from stock to after the pipes and FREAK kit was an increase of 12.8 HP and 6.6 Torque. Some folks here have posted more increase, and I have done more rejeting since the last dyno. Using the “seat of my pants” test, a remarkable increase in performance.

K&N's are subject to a lot of controversy, mainly concerns about (lack of) filtration capability. If you use them, keep that in mind. Check out the air filter thread at http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi I personally would consider UNI's before K&N's.

I have K&N's installed, with "the freak" airbox elimination kit installed as well. I've also re-jetted to 160 main-jets (with the stock Keihens). After accomplishing those basic revisions, here is what I noticed. The motorcycle has a lot more useable power. It really didn't effect the "top-speed" much, - but, I can get to 100mph waaay faster than before. There is also a noticeable "sucking-sound" coming through the K&N filters when I goose it. At idle, the motorcycle seems gentle & predictable.

My first impression (and I remember this clearly) was that I've given my Speedmaster a "split-personality." It like a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde syndrome. I'll be at a stoplight idling with a predictable unassuming & gentle lope, - but when I take off & goose it, - it feels like a hell's broken loose.

Just one man's opinion

"Speedmaster" is a title not a name, - and the title is not plural.
